october wines (2020)
imagining a world where big-box store brands represent the values of its customers at large may feel a little bleak, given the circumstances that so many of people are living in.
but when i was tasked with creating materials for an entire line of alcohol products for a graphic production class, i kept this in mind while designing every aspect of it. october wines is a biodynamic boxed wine concept, rooted in the principles of sustainability and justice. besides being given a rubric and a lesson on what biodynamic wine is, i had complete creative freedom, right down to naming and writing copy. so why not invent a brand that is – somehow, in our capitalistic society – actually serious about fighting for a clean earth and a more accessible product? the stationary and packaging i generated for this project was inspired by hand-drawn and hand-lettered protest posters, radical literature, and zines that have been an integral piece at the core of revolutions for generations. but beyond that, it’s still whimsical and down-to-earth, and it’s a label that someone in a store will want to pick up regardless of what they know about its mission or meaning.
